Piano                               By Liam 👍

Picture pressing every single piano key down at the exact same time.  Or take a piano apart and put it back together again.  It is a complicated instrument, and you need lots of practice to be good at playing the piano?  Did you know the piano has over 2500 parts in it?  The piano belongs to the string instrument family and has been one of the most popular stringed instruments since the 18th century.

The piano was invented in Italy by Bartolomeo Cristofori around the 1700’s. The word piano comes from the Italian word pianoforte, which means soft and loud. It’s one of the best jazz instruments ever created.  But a lot of time there is only one stringed instrument in a band.

It is very interesting how the piano works. It works differently than most instruments.  It has 200-240 strings that get plucked by a hammer. Inside the piano there is a cast iron plate that goes over the sound board and pin block.  The pin block gives tension to the strings.  There are 52 white keys and 36 black keys that you press to move the hammer.  There are also 3 pedals that allow you to change the tone of the notes. Crazy huh?  You probably already know this, but the piano doesn’t show its strings, so you don’t see the action while you play.

The keyboard is an electronic version of the piano.  It is an instrument like the piano, but the piano has one sound, and the keyboard has up to 400 different sounds.  Also, when you press a piano key down with a certain pressure it will go louder or quieter.  When you press a keyboard key down, it will play the same sound no matter how hard you press it.  The keyboard is also smaller than the acoustic piano.  Fun fact! The keyboard was made in the 1960’s, a very long time after the piano was made.

In conclusion, the piano has been around for a long time.  It has many keys, notes, and pedal techniques to learn.  If you love playing instruments, the piano is one I highly recommend and if you want an instrument with more sounds, a keyboard is the way to go.  I would say the piano is a challenging instrument to play.  I have been playing for several years and still learning new notes every week.
